  Can I change my domain to one that is no longer in use?

  You can change your site’s address following the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/changing-site-address/

  If the address you want to change to already exists though, your only option is to export https://wordpress.com/support/export/ and import https://wordpress.com/support/import/#import-content-from-another-word-press-site between the sites.

  Thanks, that’s helpful. The problem I’m having is it says the URL I’ve chosen can’t be used. But when I go to it, WordPress says it doesn’t exist.

  It’s one I used to have years ago that I changed. Is there no way of having it back?

  I’m afraid that’s a no. It’s not possible to reuse addresses that have been changed or canceled.
