Changing name of domain

When I change my main domain name (which I registered on wordpress.com), is the old domain name again available to everyone?
Can someone clarify? Thanks to all.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Are you speaking of your custom domain, weliketruffles.com?

Domains like that are registered for a full year at a time, and once registered cannot be changed. If you want to use a different domain, the only way to do that is to register a brand new domain, and pay for it separately.

Then you have a choice – you can continue using weliketruffles.com as well as a secondary domain, which will ensure any existing links on the web that used that domain will keep working; you can keep it, but only until it expires, at which point existing links will stop working; or you can cancel it, at which point you immediately stop owning the domain and any existing links will stop working.

If you allow it to expire or cancel it, it will go through a process that lasts several weeks before it’s eventually deleted and released at the registry that controls all .com domains. Once that happens anyone will be able to register the domain again, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to get it back should you want it again in future, as someone else might own the domain by that point.

    Kokkieh,
Thank you for precise and comprehensive respond. Another related question if I may. Right now weliketruffles.com is hosted by wordpress: can I transfer it to another host?

  • Hi there,

If you’re referring to the domain weliketruffles.com, then you’ll only be able to transfer it to another registrar 60 days after the day of registration which will be December 20.

If you’re referring to your site, then you’re free to transfer it to another host any time you like. Here’s a guide on how to do it:

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.
