Changing nameservers and WordPress.org

Just a quick question. I registered my current domain with WordPress.com, but I wish to have a separate host with WordPress.org software. I have the nameservers and such and played around with switching the nameservers, but I’m pretty new to all this so I’m not sure if I’m doing it right or wrong.
I know I can’t transfer the registrar right now because my 60 days aren’t up. Can I actually switch over my blog to WordPress.org Software by just switching the nameservers? Hopefully I’m being clear about this if I need to post more information just ask for it.

Once you have a host set up properly and have installed the WordPress.ORG software you can then change the name servers to point to your new host and site – no need to transfer the domain.
