Changing PHP files in WordPress.com Business Plan
-
On the Business Plan, what is the best way to change php files? there is no FTP, so using the web interface is the only way, is that correct?

Hi there,
It is not possible to directly edit the source code of any site on WordPress.com, regardless of plan.
If you need to make changes to your theme’s files, we recommend creating a child theme and uploading that to your site. Or there are plugins you can use to add custom code to, for example the functions.php, header.php and footer.php files on a site without editing the files directly.

Which plugins allow you to add use to add custom code to those php files without editing the files directly

I’m actually wanting to make small changes to existing theme and plugin php files. Its seems I am able to do this in this way:
Appearance -> Editor and
Plugins – EditorHowever I’m a bit concerned that if I make a small error, that the site will go down and I wont be able to access it any more (which is why I normally use FTP on self hosting sites)
Is there another way to do this on wordpress.com business plan?

Hi there,
On the Business plan, if you go in the Activity tab in your Stats page (https://wordpress.com/stats/activity/) you have the option to restore your site to an earlier version (before making an error).
-
If there is a php error and the site breaks, what happens then. Is the site recoverable at all?

Can you please provide a screenshot of that page? My client has not provided access this, (only to WordPress wp-admin)
I would like to see how it displays that backups are available to restore.
Thanks

That is not possible. If you have been added as an admin on the site you should be able to access all pages in either WP-Admin or the My Sites interface. If your user role does not permit access to any pages, we cannot provide you with a screen shot of that page as another user on the site will see it.
You also have not provided the URL of the actual site, and your account is not showing as a member on any WordPress.com Business Plan sites. If the site owner added you directly from WP-Admin, it means they also deactivated Jetpack’s SSO feature which causes several features on the site to break and which would explain why our system does not recognise you as a user on the site.
Reading through the thread again I also noticed you asked this:
Its seems I am able to do this in this way:
Appearance -> Editor and
Plugins – EditorThat is not possible on WordPress.com Business Plan sites. As I said in my original reply, if you need to make changes to those files the best way to do it is via a code snippet plugin, and you’d need to be invited as an admin on the site via My Site ->People ->Add in order to install that.

I’m confused why I am seeing
Appearance – Editor and
Plugins -> EditorI can see under
http://whois.domaintools.comthat their Name Servers are
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COMIs there another wordpress.com plan that allows updating the php files?
-
Im now thinking it must be self hosted, but I don’t know how that is possible if the nameservers are
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COM -
I’m confused why I am seeing
Appearance – Editor and
Plugins -> EditorThose options still show on WordPress.com Business Plan sites, but they do not work on WordPress.com sites because WordPress.com Business Plan sites do not function the same way a self-hosted installation of WordPress does.
Im now thinking it must be self hosted, but I don’t know how that is possible if the nameservers are
It is impossible to advise you on this if you don’t tell us the actual site you are speaking of.
