Changing Registrar from GoDaddy to WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I am new to WordPress. I currently have a website registered and hosted on GoDaddy and want to change to WordPress. I’ve built a website in WordPress and found instructions on how to map my existing domain to it, but is it possible to transfer the domain registration to WordPress also? I only found the How To for changing FROM WordPress to something else. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Milan

You can’t move a domain name TO WordPress.COM – as you have found you can map an existing domain name to a blog here. You can move to another registrar if you don’t like Godaddy – but the move can’t be to WordPress.COM with the name.

Once I map the domain name to my WordPress blog/site, can I renew the domain name registration through WordPress, or do I still have to go through GoDaddy? On their site it says

“After you set third-party nameservers and the DNS propagates, you can no longer manage your domain name’s DNS in our system and must contact your third-party provider to do so.”

I’m not sure I understand what that means.

You will still need to pay Godaddy for the domain name registration.

“After you set third-party nameservers and the DNS propagates, you can no longer manage your domain name’s DNS in our system and must contact your third-party provider to do so.”

You do the domain mapping setup here not a Godaddy after you change the name servers. Note that if you have an email account that is tied to your domain name it will stop working. You will need to either map back to the email servers or set up an account with Google Aps which will allow you to have a custom email – sorry I don’t have the link for the email thing.
