  We need an updated wordpress site. We have a third party that has been in charge of it for several years and unwilling to improve it so we want to do it on our own. What are the steps?

  Here, at WordPress.com, we offer a managed hosting environment. This allows you to focus more on content versus back end details. It’s also more user friendly.

  When using the open source WordPress.org software, understand that it’s a community maintained project. Help comes from forum volunteers. With that version you’re on the hook for all the details of the site.
