Changing/Updating Domain for Existing Site

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a blog that I have maintained on this site for over a year. I have a lot of content here that I would like to carry over to a new website that will function as a personal branding page. I am currently using the free version of WordPress, but will be purchasing a professional level membership shortly.

My problem is the domain that is currently associated with the page. I understand that when I purchase a page I can also purchase a domain to go with it (eliminating the wordpress.com part of the address). But my question is about the content that is already associated with the old domain. Can I:
    A) Purchase the WordPress Premium package and get the opportunity to change the domain of my existing page at that time
    – or –
    B) Purchase a new WordPress Page and a new associated domain, and somehow convert the posts from my previous page over to the new page?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

A)I understand that when I purchase a page I can also purchase a domain to go with it (eliminating the wordpress.com part of the address)

Correct! A paid plan includes a domain credit which you can use to register a new domain.

My problem is the domain that is currently associated with the page.

I can’t see any domains on the account you are logged in to. Do you already own the domain. And if so, did you register it through WordPress.com or another registrar?

But my question is about the content that is already associated with the old domain.

Will both of the sites be created under the same user account? Or separate user accounts?

Once I know more I can point you in the right direction :)

    Hi Gemma,

To answer your questions: No, I have not purchased or registered the domain yet. The only one I have is the free one that is associated with my account currently.

Yes, when I purchase it I will purchase and register it under the same user account.

The reason I am asking is because I want to make sure that the data can be pulled from my old site (knowledgetobridgethegap.wordpress.com) to the new site once I purchase a package and domain through WordPress. If not, I will have to explore other options. Another website creator I am looking at offers data conversion from any site for free as a part of the package when you purchase a website with them, and if my old WordPress blog posts cannot be pulled into the new site I want to build then I would be looking at this other vendor since they offer the conversions.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

The reason I am asking is because I want to make sure that the data can be pulled from my old site (knowledgetobridgethegap.wordpress.com) to the new site

Yes this can be done. You would need to export an .xml file of your content from knowledgetobridgethegap.wordpress.com, using these instructions:

    Export Your Website’s Content

Then you can import the .xml file into your new site using these instructions:

    Import a Website

You can begin this process before you purchase a plan with your chosen domain.

Come back to me if you have any questions, I’m happy to help.
