Choosing a new therme
-
I’d be grateful for advice on switching themes. I’ve been posting for many years, but the theme I’ve always used — Kubrick — is no longer supported by WordPress and is starting to develop compatibility issues with newer editor features. Although I’m willing to consider migrating to a newer theme, I’m having trouble finding what I’m looking for. For example, Kubrick’s homepage displays not only full posts, but also all my categories, which makes it easy to find specific posts or groups of posts dealing with similar issues. My Kubrick theme is also completely text-focused: I use no graphics whatsoever and am not interested in starting now. Given that WordPress retired Kubrick from its theme directory, any switch away from it would be permanent, so I won’t be able to switch back if I have second thoughts about a new theme.

A couple of things worth knowing before you start browsing:
On previewing: You can preview any theme on your actual site before activating it, so you’re not committing blindly. Take your time testing a few before making it live.
On categories: Most modern themes don’t display categories directly on the homepage the way Kubrick does. Instead, categories typically appear in a sidebar widget or navigation menu. You can add a Categories widget to your sidebar under Appearance → Widgets.
For text-focused options, start by browsing wordpress.com/themes and filtering by “Blog.” Themes like Hemingway and Texty are specifically built around typography and reading, with no emphasis on images.
The main adjustment with any modern theme will be the block editor rather than the classic editor. It works differently but it’s not difficult once you get used to it. -
Thanks very much for the useful advice, mbarekam. Because WordPress previews offer a limited idea of how my existing blog would look with other themes, I think I’ll start a new blog just to use as a sandbox to experiment.
