clutter on site & "customize" menu won't respond to me

  • Unknown's avatar

I just upgraded to a premium “debut” theme. When I try to customize it, it does not respond to my changes (like changing the background color). Also, when I previewed it, my site looked clean; once I bought it, my pages are cluttered with icons I don’t want. I am not able to remove them (like “following” and “post” and “uncategorized” appearing on each page.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

I’d be happy to help you with this. First, I want to mention that some of the options in the Customizer (Colors, Fonts, and CSS) are part of the Custom Design upgrade. You can purchase that upgrade to use those advanced customization features.

However, you can still make some changes to the theme without that upgrade. For example, you can change the background color by going to Appearance > Background in your dashboard. From there, you can select a custom color or background image for your theme.

my pages are cluttered with icons I don’t want. I am not able to remove them (like “following” and “post” and “uncategorized” appearing on each page.

I took a look at your pages, and I am not seeing those icons you mentioned. Can you give me a link to one of the pages where they appear? I’d be happy to take another look.

If you have any other questions, you can also get in touch directly with the theme author in the Debut support forum here:

    Hello again,

I looked again, and you’re right: the extra icons don’t appear.

The only thing I need help with now is removing the “no categories” tab that appears at the top of each page.

    How do I do this?

    Thanks!

    Hi Elana,

In the Debut theme, that tab (where you see “no categories”) is called the Primary Menu. One way to get rid of it is to set up a custom menu for that menu — you can either replace it with different menu items or create an empty menu so nothing shows up there.

We have a guide for creating custom menus here: Custom Menus

When you create the menu, be sure to assign it as the Primary Menu for your theme. If you have any questions about that, please let me know!

Thank you for your reply. I found the custom menu guide and learned how to click on “create new menu”, name that menu, and then assign it the primary menu position.

However, I couldn’t figure out how to create an empty menu so nothing shows up there. The “categories” link on the left doesn’t seem to give me that option.

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Elana,

To create an empty menu, you can just remove each of the links that are already in your custom menu. First, go to Appearance > Menus in your dashboard, and you will see the custom menu you created. To remove a menu item, click the arrow on the right of the item to see the menu item settings and then click on the Remove link there. You can repeat this for each item in the menu.

Once you remove all of the items from the menu, scroll down to the Menu Settings for your menu. There, click the box next to Primary Menu. Then click the Save Menu button to save your changes.

Please let me know if I can provide any further help with that! :)

Okay, the good news is that I managed to get the “uncategorized” tab off the pages.

The not-so-happy news is that I now have 2 sets of navigation tabs on each page–on the top right (“welcome”, “approach”, etc.) and under my name (“welcome”, “approach”, etc.)

I would like to keep the tabs on the top right if possible, and eliminate them from under my name. How do I do this?

    Thanks!

    Hi Elana,

I see that you successfully removed one of the sets of navigation tabs, so now there is just one menu under your name.

If you want to switch that so the menu is only in the top right, and not under your name, you can do that if you want. Under Appearance > Menus in your dashboard, you can click the Manage Locations tab. This page lets you select where you want each menu to appear. Next to Top Menu (the upper right menu) select menu1, and next to Primary Menu (the menu under your name) select menu. That will swap the menus so the empty one is under your name and the tabs show up in the upper right.

Please let me know if you have any questions. :)
