Comments from the same author are not autoapproved

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

In my Discussion Settings, I have

Comment must be manually approved – Unchecked
Comment author must have a previously approved comment – Checked

But when an author makes a comment after their earlier comment is approved, the new comment is not autoapproved, it is held in moderation. The comment author is using a non-wordpress.com website as URL. Any ideas why the auto-approval is not working?

    Thanks.

  • Hi there,

On what site is this? The only site in your account is https://wptestblogsite.wordpress.com/ and there are no comments on that site.

    Hi kokieh,

Just curious, does it matter which site it is? I mean is it not a settings related thing, and not related to what site it is?

But yes, I tested it on https://wptestblogsite.wordpress.com/.

After manually approving a comment from, say, Author A, using Email A and Website A (I used real email and website URL), future comments of that author were not autoapproved; they were held in moderation.

    Thanks for your time.

  • It does matter which site it is, as I need to take a look at the comments to see if there’s anything in the user info on the comment that might be causing this. But as there are no comments on that site I can only assume you deleted them all, meaning there’s nothing for me to check.

If this happens again, please let me know, and don’t delete the comments.

Oh, I am sorry. I didn’t think this was a “support” forum, I thought you were another forum user trying to help figure out what the issue is :) I’m not new to WordPress.com or WordPress.org self hosted, but new to this forum.

I went ahead and posted sample comments on

    First blog post

The first one, I manually approved. After that, it did not autoapprove the second one, even though I have “Comment author must have a previously approved comment” checked.

A friend told me that it could be related to that the email I used while commenting might be flagged as a spammer. That is my legit website email (also has Gravatar), so it would be sad if that’s the case.

By the way, is there a way to delete my duplicate comment above (on this thread) I made by mistake using my other account (eommus).

Thank you very much for your help.

  • Did you make the second comment after you’d approved the first one, or did you leave both comments and only then approved the first one?

Please approve the second comment, then wait a while, and only then leave a new comment with that account. I’d also recommend completely clearing your browser cache before logging in as the other account to comment.

Testing comments in the way you’re doing does not always work correctly, especially not if you’re doing it from the same internet connection/IP and browser that you use for your other account. A real visitor to your site will not be leaving comments from the same IP address you use. A real visitor also won’t leave two very short comments within two minutes of each other – only spammers leave that type of comment.

I’d suggest you rather wait until an actual visitor to your site starts leaving real comments. If you then notice this still happens, let us know as then we’ll have real data to work with.

    Hi kokkieh,

This actually happened for the first time on a blog of a friend. Many times for my new comments on different days, after my first comment was approved manually. Then, I tried it on my test blog, to figure out if the issue is specific to that blog, using the same name/email/URL combination. It just keeps my comments under moderation, even though the earlier ones are manually approved and that option in Discussion Settings is checked.

Another info to work with: I made comments on a few other blogs (blogs of people who write about the same topics as my site). Those comments also ended up in spam filter. I did not use any URLs within my comment bodies. I just used a non-WordPress URL as my site. I then contacted those blog owners, and they manually approved my comments.

Based on your reply, the only explanation that comes to my mind is that my email is flagged as a spammer in the spam database of WordPress, even though I only posted legit/approved comments. It is kind of sad and makes me not want to visit WordPress sites and try to communicate via their authors with comments.

“A real visitor also won’t leave two very short comments within two minutes of each other – only spammers leave that type of comment.”

You can’t say that for sure. I can think of legit scenarios for that. If the spam algorithm is based on assumptions of this kind, I am afraid many legit readers’ comments will end up in the spam filter as mine.

    Thanks for your time.

That is a possibility. If you suspect your comments are being flagged as spam, please contact Akismet directly. Select the “I think Akismet is catching my comments by mistake” option when submitting the form:

Thank you, I did as you suggested.

    Hi again,

Here is the reply I got from them after about 5 emails:

“I can assure you that Akismet is not affecting your comments as we don’t put comments in moderation, so the site owners themselves must have some comment moderation filtering set in their site somewhere or they have a bug in their installation. If they don’t have any special moderation rules enabled and they continue to have trouble, they should reach out to WordPress.com support and see why comments from previously approved commenters (that are not being marked as spam) are going to moderation instead of posting.”

You say there’s no issue with WordPress, they say there’s no issue with Akismet, but my comments are still held in moderation for I don’t know why. I give up. Thanks for your time.

  • This is when you comment as the eommus username, correct? Can you please give a link to the friend’s blog you mention where your comments are being held for moderation?
