Comments on blog posts
-
I want to enable comments on blog posts. I like the simple line ‘Leave a Reply.’ I don’t need to collect names or emails. I went to Settings and Discussion for blog posts and toggled the choices and ‘saved’ my settings. How commenting on my blog posts shows up is wildly different. Some days it just says ‘Leave a Replay.’ Some days, it asks for name and email (which I don’t want.) Some blog posts show ENORMOUS social icons, which I think I’ve disabled. I am unclear whether I need to insert a ‘Comment Block’ after each blog post or if I’ve checked what I want under Settings and Discussion if the blog posts automatically display a way to comment. I’d like for it to be consistent and automatic and so far, I’m failing at it. Can anyone please explain how to include the opportunity to comment, easily, without social icons, retweet, reblog, etc. Thanks

I can’t disable comments on my blog anymore,no option appears on my site to do so. I would really like the option to disable all comments permenently in advance.
The blog I need help with is all of them but right now I was trying to disable comments permanently on,https://thebeatleswereneveraboybandtheywerealwaysagreatrockpoprockrockn.wordpress.com/

I can see the inconsistencies you describe there and on first glance, and looking at the editor, this looks like it may be a bug. We’d need to find out if this bug is theme or block based.
Can you tell me if you’ve added this block yourself, or if this was imported in, or already present please? This will help us to troubleshoot this.
Hello @topazthecat1000
All comments can be deactivated here: https://thebeatleswereneveraboybandtheywerealwaysagreatrockpoprockrockn.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-discussion.php. I hope this helps.

I pressed the + to add a block and then chose “comments.” This created a huge form, heading, pagination etc. I deleted all of that as I only wanted to display “Leave a Reply.” I’ve tried deleted everything and starting by adding the block again and then I got ENORMOUS social icons. So I deleted again and updated every blog post and didn’t add a block for comments at all. Now there is no way for anyone to comment.
I thought comments on blog posts are automatic when you choose “Settings” and “Discussion” and toggle the comment choices you want to use. That doesn’t work either. Now there is no way to comment. Please help me understand how to allow comments under each blog post without all the extra info or social icons.

Hi! They are automatic on blog posts (but not pages) unless you remove the comment form. Can you try adding the comments block again, saving it and viewing the live site? Pagination shouldn’t come into play unless your article has a ton of comments on it, and it shouldn’t ask for a name/email/etc if you’re logged in. The editor is just going to show everything so you can see how it would look in those cases.
If you have issues with anything that’s left there, or if if you are running into a bug, please leave it in place and get in touch with your concerns so we can see what you’re seeing. -
Please look at my blog now. I left it alone and automatic comment form came up as “leave a reply” for the most recent blog post which is great. But previous posts ( not pages) now have the giant, enormous social icons which I don’t want. How can all my blog posts just have a simple comment area without having to enter email and without the ginormous social icons? This can’t be that hard! Please help.

Okay, I put up a new blog post for today and DID NOT add a comments block, because my understanding is for blog posts, the comments section is generated automatically. I’ve given up on comments for past posts, because it never works. If I “add” a comment block, I get ginormous social icons and the form asks for emails and names. I do not want that. So going forward, I want to publish blog posts and have comments section populate automatically. So the comment area SHOULD be automatic. If you look at the past two days of blog posts, the post for December 31 HAS an area to comment, but today’s from January 1 DOES NOT. Why?
I decided to check different devices to see what shows up for my blog. On my iPhone, I can see the comments section for the past two blog posts. But on my laptop and my iPad, the only comment area on my website is on the December 31 blog post. There is NOTHING for today’s blog post. Keep in mind, I followed the advice and the understanding that for blog posts, you do not ADD a comment block. I did not add one for December 31 and comment section did come up automatically. I did not add a comment block for January 1 and comment block DID NOT show up, except for on iPhone.
Please advise. Thanks.

I think it is the actually Dec 31st post that isn’t displaying correctly. The other posts display the reply box once you click on the title of the post. That is the correct behaviour and is the way most themes at WordPress.com work.
-
Wow! thank you for explaining. I didn’t know you had to click the title, but now see that it works. I think I fixed the December 31 post, too. For future, I will just blog and let the comment section populate automatically like it should. Phew.

Hi,
Thank you very much, but strangely I don’t get the Discussion section unless I clicked on your highlighted link for it.

Hey there,
Hmm, you should be seeing it here also: https://wordpress.com/settings/discussion/roadkidds.wordpress.com located under Settings > Discussions.
To check – are you not seeing this in WordPress.com?

@topazthecat1000 , so I noticed “The Blog” links to this about page:
https://roadkidds.wordpress.com/about-us/
If you have content on that page, it’s being replaced by blog posts. And the front page currently feels more like the about page. You can totally leave that way if you want to, but if you’re having trouble seeing your blog posts, I wonder if your visitors are, too.Would you be open to setting up a page with some about information AND some blog posts on it, and then making that the front page? Or, do you have something else in mind?
If you want a front page with some about info and blog posts, here’s how to set that up:
- start here: https://wordpress.com/page
- Insert a blog pattern (here’s how)
- Swap out any images and text, or add more patterns if you’d like, but leave the blog block there
- If you love the result, save it, then make it the front page of the site. Here’s how.
If you need more help with this, we’re glad to assist. Would you like to make a new topic here and just reference this old one? That way the original poster won’t keep getting replies while we work with you.

@topazthecat1000 So just to check – if you go to this page: https://wordpress.com/home/thebeatleswereneveraboybandtheywerealwaysagreatrockpoprockrockn.wordpress.com
Does that open correctly for you? And if you look at the panel on the left-hand side of that page, does the ‘Settings’ section appear for you? It should be the final one in the panel. In that Settings section, ‘Discussion’ should be the fourth sub-option there – does that show up for you at all?

@topazthecat1000 As I said to the OP clicking on a title of a post such as https://roadkidds.wordpress.com/2023/01/19/lost-interest-in-rocks/ reveals the comment box at the bottom.

@topazthecat1000 I feel like we’re each not quite seeing what the other is seeing. If you’re still struggling, would you be willing to share screenshots here?
Here’s how to create a screenshot; you can add them to your response here.
