.com/.org themes
-
Recently, I’ve been noticing that the themes available on WordPress.com are no longer available for download for self-hosted blogs.
Am I wrong? Was there an announcement? Did I miss something?
C’s there are some themes on .com that I’d love to use on a standalone blog.
Just saying.
(btw, I posted this question over on .org too)

There’s churn in the .org themes which is natural, since the themes are offered by their designers, who may get tired of them. If you see something you like, grab it.

That principle I can understand, but ALL the themes? Granted, I haven’t searched for every single one, but none of the ones from A-C that I looked for are available for download for .org.
I’ve been WordPressing for three years now, having started with self-hosting (I had to get the .com blog to get my API code) and I’ve been grabbing all the themes I like over the years. This is the first time I’ve noticed a divergence in the world of WP themes, and it’s because all of a sudden I’m looking for single-column themes. For my personal blogs I prefer three-column themes, which weren’t all that plentiful back in the day. Now People change. I like Ambiru and Day Dream very much (available over here). They used to be available for stand-alone blogs too but I can’t find any single-column theme I like for download anymore.
I wondered whether it had to do with the divergence in the software – the fact that .com uses MU coding. But I also wondered whether Automattic had started a new policy of offering special themes on .com, which is perfectly fair. I just wondered whether I’d missed some announcement or other.
Course, I could just get Sandbox and start making my own theme, but I’m slow, and clothing something entirely naked is going to take a lot of time that I don’t have to spare right now. Maybe, though, that’s the way to go.
Just curious, that’s all.
