Composing- is using block my only option?

I am trying to compose a poem. I keep getting a box with symbols on top of my words, so I cannot see what I am doing. I need help to get the work done without interference.

If you scroll down a bit, that toolbar should float above out of the way of the block you’re writing in.

I had limited success- would disappear while i was typing, but return as soon as I stopped. never get to see what it looks like on the page without it.
also spacing: don’t know how to single space- I see 1.5 but not how to change it.
I found verse block but don’t know how to utilize it on the page I’m writing.
this is not making life easier!!
