Connecting a custom domain to a free wordpress site

    I need help using a custom domain I own with a wordpress free site. I have updated the Advanced DNS records with my domain provider to WordPress namerservers but I cannot connect my domain on my site without purchasing a plan? Is my only option to buy a plan? I need to connect my domain with wordpress so that I can manage the MX records and update my custom email too.

    You can forward a custom domain to a free wordpress.com website whereby visitors see your wordpress.com subdomain.
