Content rights
-
I’m thinking about posting snippets of my work on my blog, and I just want to make sure that I’m not accidentally giving anyone else rights to my writing.
In the terms of service, it says ‘You own all content you post to your website’, but then goes on to say ‘By submitting Content to Automattic for inclusion on your website, you grant Automattic a world-wide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, modify, adapt, and publish the Content solely for the purpose of displaying, distributing, and promoting your website’, and I’m just a little bit confused as to exactly what this means.
Does this literally just mean Automattic can use what I write and post it to my blog? And then that’s all it will be used for? Or can my writing be used for anything else?
Thank you!

Hi there,
That part of the terms of service is what allows us to show your posts in the WordPress.com Reader, in a public RSS feed, via the Reblog feature that allows other people to share it on their sites, to feature your content on our Discover blog, etc., “for the purpose of displaying, distributing, and promoting your website”.
It’s there to allow us to promote your content so other people can find it.
