  There’s a good chance I’m confused, but it seems to me that if I get one of the Happiness Engineers to do a Guided Transfer from WordPress.com to WordPress.org, they will want to use one of their own hosts as indicated on the FAQ on https://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
  Can I use any web host?
  We require your new web hosting account to be with one of our recommended hosts.

  But if you do it yourself (https://move.wordpress.com/find-a-new-host/) it says ‘We have a list of recommended WordPress hosts at get.wp.com/hosting, but you are free to choose any host you like.’

  So can I choose my own hosting company or not?

  Hi there,

  If we perform the transfer ourselves (Guided Transfer), then we can only use one of the hosts mentioned here:

  Compatible Hosts for WordPress.com Guided Transfer

  If you transfer the site yourself following the instructions you mentioned above, then you can use any host you like.
