Create a new user with username to match an existing blog?

I have three blogs under my account, lets call these A, B and C. These are all administrated by my account A. I would now like to create a new user with a username equal to one of the secondary blog names, eg B. One way I can see to do this is by renaming my blog B to something else, this option allows me to create a matching username at the same time – but I don’t want to rename my blog.

An alternative method of inviting a user, I think, requires that I register the new user (B) first; but I cant do that either because the username B is reserved as my blog B exists with that name.

Hope that all makes sense! Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

This can be done, but you’ll need to follow a bit of a roundabout path to do it.

Make sure you’re logged out of your account completely (clear browser cookies to make sure) and register a new username. You can use something completely random – don’t make it match site B, as that won’t work.

You can use this link to create a username without creating yet another site:

    https://wordpress.com/start/account/user/

Once you’ve created the new user, log into this account and transfer site B to the new username:

Transferring a Site to Another WordPress.com Account

Then log back into the new account. Now that it owns site B, you should be able to change the account’s username to match site B’s URL.

    Ingenious!

Thanks very much, I’ll give it a try.

  • I figured this out through trial and error when I wanted to do the same a few years ago. As far as I know it should still work :)
