  I already have the domain name, and hosting – but I would like to create a website with wordpress. I am a photographer.

  Hi there,

  You can create a site by starting here:

  https://wordpress.com/start/

  In order to use your domain hosted elsewhere with your WordPress.com site, you’ll need to change the domain nameservers at your domain host, and point them over to WordPress.com. Our nameservers are:

  NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
  NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
  NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

  Then, you’ll need to purchase the mapping subscription upgrade as a part of a paid plan so that you can map your domain over to your WordPress.com site.

  Thank you very much – that is helpful.

  Before I can start the subscription, I need to build my website. I am currently on Fine Art America but want to create my own with WordPress. But how do I build a WordPress website whilst my current website is still up? Can I?

  Also is there somewhere I can look at themes before I made a decision to start building?

  It will be a steep learning curve as I don’t know how it will all work.

  Okay, so your site and domain is already hosted elsewhere, but you are creating a new site at WordPress.com to replace that site? If that is the case, you can keep the domain pointed at your current host and begin creating your site here at WordPress.com. While you are creating the site, you can make sure it is set to private:

  http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

  Also is there somewhere I can look at themes before I made a decision to start building?

  Additional note: once you have finished your site, then you can point the domain over from your old site to your WordPress.com site and make it public. That way your site will never be down to the public.

  Thanks again – I tried the link for the themes but it states ” you don’t have a wordpress website yet – would you like to start one”…

  A bit of a catch 22!

  Why so? If you’re definitely sure you want to move to WordPress.com (here) and away from wherever you currently are hosted then you need to create a site here as already explained. It can be a free one (ending in .wordpress.com or similar) until you’re ready to upgrade to a paid plan to map/transfer the domain you already own to it.

  Yup, just noting you can go ahead and create a free separate site. You have have an address like this:

  mynewartsite.wordpress.com

  and then when you’re ready, we can help you map your real domain so that it works with the site you’ve created.
