Hi, I am thinking of creating a blog with wordpress, either the free version or the .com version.
1. Is the .com version what I want with .com at the end or is it .wordpress.com?
2. If I choose the .com version, does it mean that I own the blog or does it still belong to wordpress? I.e. would I have to self-host to have the rights to my own blog?
3. Are the costs for the .com version $10 per month for the first year and then only $24 per year after that, or is it $120 +$24 each year after that?
4. What are the benefits of having wordpress compared to creating your own website?

It’s both. Every site that’s created on WordPress.com gets a free *.wordpress.com subdomain, or one of a selection of free .blog subdomains, that will exist as long as your site exists.
If you upgrade to a paid plan, you can then add a custom domain ending in .com or any of the other domain extensions we support:

Your site and everything you create on it belongs to you. We lay no claim of ownership to your content, and you can export it, and any domain you register with us, to another provider at any time.

All upgrades are billed annually. So the Premium Plan would be A$120, with a free domain registration for the first year. From the second year the plan will renew at A$120, and the domain will renew at a separate cost which depends on the type of domain you register. If you specifically register a .com domain, that renewal cost will be A$24
4. What are the benefits of having wordpress compared to creating your own website?
Both “having wordpress” and “creating your own website” in that sentence can mean different things.
WordPress is the name of a piece of software that you use to create a website. You can download that software from the WordPress.org website, and install it on your own personal server, or with a hosting provider, and then you’d be what we call self-hosting a WordPress site.
WordPress.com is a hosting provider where we use a modified version of that software to allow anyone to create their own website, but we manage the software for you so you don’t have to worry about updates and security patches, backups, or configuring and running a server. With a WordPress.com site we take care of the technical aspects for you so you can just focus on managing your site’s content.

“Creating your own website” can also mean not using a piece of software like WordPress, but instead coding a website from scratch. To do that you’d need to know not only how to run a server, but how to create and maintain a website from the source code level.
An obvious benefit there is that you’ll be able to do whatever you want with the site, but only within the limits of your own coding knowledge. Most people nowadays uses a content management system like WordPress instead, as it just makes the process of creating a site so much simpler.
