Creating a website via wordpress with A2hosting

    Hi, I’m a total newbie on this.

    1. Got A2hosting and a domain there.
    2. Now I’m trying to make our company website via WordPress as they said it would be easier for me to navigate.
    3. Not sure on the cost impact for our company in choosing Transfer Domain or Mapping Domain (aside from the whopping $750 charge for the latter). Am confused as to why it’s needed. Please advise on best option for us.

    Hi there,

    First, “WordPress” can mean one of two things:

    WordPress refers to the open source WordPress software found on WordPress.org. Anyone can download that software, and install it on their own server, or with a hosting provider like A2hosting, where it sounds like you already have an account. If you want to install WordPress with them, best would be to contact their support to find out the process they recommend. And you can ask in https://wordpress.org/support/forums/ for help using the software itself.

    WordPress.com, where you are now, is a hosting provider, like A2hosting, but we use a modified version of the WordPress software here that works a bit differently than the regular open source version, and sites using the open source software at another hosting provider have nothing to do with WordPress.com.

    If you decide to host the site with us on WordPress.com, whether you transfer the domain to us or only map it is entirely up to you. You will need to purchase a paid plan from us to add a domain to a WordPress.com site either way, but you won’t be paying A2hosting any hosting costs in that case. Beyond that the only difference would be differences in the renewal cost of the domain with us vs A2hosting.

    I’m not sure where you’re getting a $750 cost, though. Transferring a domain to WordPress.com requires you to upgrade to one of our paid plans, starting at $48 for a single year on our Personal Plan, to $499 for a two-year subscription on our Business Plan (all plans are available on a one, or two-year subscription).

    Once you have a paid plan, you can transfer in one domain to us for free, which includes a domain renewal once the transfer completes. Following years the domain will renew at an additional cost on top of the plan, as per the pricing page I linked to above.
