Creating single page with no menu items or page titles

  I would like to create a simple single column blog for my family. I’ve tried out a few themes, and I’ve deleted the menu, but the remaining page has the title of “menu” or “blog” at the top, which looks ridiculous. I just want a single page with none of this other crap — what am I missing?
