Custom CSS

  I want to customize my site using CSS, to narrow the sidebars and widen the main content, but I don’t know how I can do that without access to the original theme CSS. I don’t know what the selectors are. The last time I customized my blog, I had access to the original CSS so that I could work from that. Now WordPress doesn’t seem to grant me that access. So how can I know what selectors to use in my custom CSS?
