  I want to understand if I can transfer an expired domain from Squarespace to WordPress or if I should just renew with Squarespace and then pay the mapping fee with WordPress.

  It’s not possible to transfer domains to us at all, so you’ll need to renew it with Squarespace and map it here, yes.
