Custom Domain Question

    Hello all,

I understand that I can’t add a custom domain unless I’m on a paid WordPress plan, but I have a question about this WP support article about domains: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/

It says that “Without a paid plan, all custom domain(s) on the site will automatically redirect to your free .wordpress.com or .wpcomstaging.com site address.”

This sounds like exactly what I’d like to do, actually. I’d love to connect the custom domain I purchased (from a separate provider) to my WordPress website even if it just ultimately redirects to my free wordpress.com address.

However, it doesn’t appear I have the option to add a custom domain at all unless I’m on a paid plan. So in order for the above quote from the support article to work, would I have to:

    – add a custom domain to my WordPress site/account while being subscribed to a paid plan, and
    – once my paid plan subscription expired, that’s when the redirect would start working as described above?

Any help would be greatly appreciated here. I’d love to use the custom domain I bought, but I don’t really have the $180/year to spare for WordPress Pro. Just trying to figure out my options, but seems like I might need to take my site elsewhere to utilize the custom domain at a price I can afford.

    Thanks!

  • Hi there,

This applies to domains that are registered through us. So, if you simply want your domain to redirect to your WordPress.com site, you can transfer it to us. You can find more information here:
