Custom Domain with Plan – what happens when plan is cancelled?

  • Unknown's avatar

If I were to pay the $4 a month plan for WordPress and get a free custom domain name, what would happen when I stopped paying for the plan? Would the domain name also not belong to me anymore? Would it switch back to domain.wordpress.com? What if I had domain.net and domain.wordpress.com isn’t available?

In other words, is the price of the domain name included in the price of the plan? Is choosing to take the site down but still owning the domain name not possible?

  • Hi there,

First, note that plans are billed yearly, so you’ll pay for the full year in advance upon purchase.

If you decide to cancel your plan before its expiration date that will not cancel the domain, and you’ll be able to continue using the domain without a plan.

Domain names need to be renewed each year, so regardless of whether or not you let the plan expire, cancel the plan, or renew the plan, you’ll need to renew the domain every year if you want to continue using it. If you let the domain expire it will eventually be released so anyone can use it again.

    What if I had domain.net and domain.wordpress.com isn’t available?

There is no requirement that the free WordPress.com address should match your domain. You can have domain.wordpress.com and register example.com to use with that site.

is the price of the domain name included in the price of the plan?

Each plan includes one domain credit that can be used to register one domain for free. At this stage the annual renewal of the plan also includes the renewal of the domain, but that could change in future.
