Custom Menu

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m really having a lot of trouble figuring out the custom menu thing, even after reading the tutorial. I am using the Sketch theme and, as far as I can tell, it will allow me to have up to 2 custom menus. I want to make an “About Me” menu and a “Recipes” menu. When I go to “create the menu” (via Appearance –> Menus), there is nothing to add to them menus once I get them created. Over on the left hand side where it lists pages, categories, etc. my posts are not there for me to add to my menus. I notice it calls them “pages” and not “posts” so I assume that could be part of the issue. Can you please instruct me on how to do this? :) I see how to create a menu but cannot figure out how to add my posts (which are already published on my page) to these menus. Thanks.

    Hi there,

Sure thing! Sorry for the trouble you’ve had with that.

To get started creating a custom menu, first you’ll need to choose a name for your menu. (It can be any name you want, like “About Me” or “Recipes” — only you will see that name.) Once you enter that name in the box you’ll need to click the blue Create Menus button.

That will create the menu so you can start adding items to it. At that point, the list on the left won’t be grayed out anymore, but it also won’t have your posts listed there individually. That’s because your posts are meant to be displayed in a list of posts — like on your blog page or on a page of all the posts in a particular category — instead of as single items in a menu. (Otherwise you’d have to add each post to your menu as you published it.)

If you’d like to have a single page in your menu, like an “About Me” page, I’d recommend creating it as a page (under Pages > Add New in the dashboard) and then adding it to your menu.

For your posts, I’d recommend putting similar posts into categories and then having those categories in the menu. For example, if you have a “Recipes” category you could put that category in the menu so visitors can click to see all your recipe posts. Or you could have subcategories there like “Dinner” or “Pasta” if you want to divide it more. You can add whole categories of posts to a menu from the Categories section on the Menus page. We have more details about those category pages and how to set them up here: Category Pages

And if you’d really prefer to have each post listed directly in the menu, you can do that by adding a custom link to each post. You can copy the link for the post, and then add it in the Links section on the Menus page.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that! :)

Thanks again for your help. I still can’t figure it out and make it work the way I want it to. I guess I’ll just roll with it for now and I’ll have to eventually upgrade to a different theme at some point since mine only allows 2 menus anyways… Again, thanks. Now, do you know how I can remove that “menu” item in the top right hand corner of my blog? http://www.broccolibabbles.com I don’t have a menu created (I deleted the ones I was toying around with) so I’m not sure why that is still showing up. When you click on it, it brings up a “home” option but again, it serves no purpose. You’ve been a lifesaver… Thanks!

    Hi there,

I’m sorry the menu still isn’t working for you! If you’d like to describe the exact steps you’re taking and where you get stuck, that might help me walk you through the process in more detail.

Now, do you know how I can remove that “menu” item in the top right hand corner of my blog?

One way to do that is by creating a custom menu with one blank custom link — that effectively creates an empty custom menu, so nothing appears in the menu area on your site.

To do that, you can create a new menu and then add a new custom link using the Links section on the Menus page. You can put anything you like in the URL section, and in the Link Text section you can add a single space. Then, click the Add to Menu button and save your menu.

Let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Thanks for your help with the menu situation. Another question – if I have an embed code, is that something I can simply copy and paste into a Text widget? Just to give you the scenario – I have an embed code from my Etsy Shop that I wanted to post on the side of my website. Is it possible to do this? The instructions on Etsy seem simple – copy and paste the embed code into a widget – but when I do that with the Text widget, it’s showing the code itself on my site instead of a “link.” Does that make sense?

Some embed codes don’t work here at WordPress.com, because some code isn’t allowed here for security reasons. Code that isn’t allowed (like Javascript or iframes) will be stripped out of widgets or the editor. I’d recommend creating a text or image link to your Etsy shop, instead, so visitors can follow the link to shop there.

If you can send me a link to the instructions on Etsy, I’ll also take a look at those to confirm whether the code should work here. If it isn’t allowed, I can forward the details about it to our team so they can see if that’s a feature we can add in the future. :)
