Customising a theme in wordpress
-
Hi, I installed wordpress into my website, so I access it using www.(mywebsitename).com/wp-admin/
I downloaded the theme Baskerville there, but I realised my options to customise are incredibly limited in www.(mywebsitename).com/wp-admin/, but I have a ton more options when I activate the theme through the wordpress blog. And I even have the option of purchasing premium there. Why is it like this? What can I do to get full customisability in my website? I don’t want to use CSS.

Hi,

Do you mean a WordPress.org site? See the WordPress.com and WordPress.org support page for a summary of the similarities and differences between the two flavors of WordPress.
So you find greater “customisability” with the free Baskerville theme in the .org site vs. the .com site? Or is it a different version of Baskerville for self-hosted sites?

Hi,
Thanks so much for your help! That page helped clear things up.. I think what happened was I found a different version of Baskerville on my self-hosted site.. But I went to download it again from wordpress.org and I got a zip file now. So I will try installing it again from here!
Thanks again :)

You’re welcome. : )

Unfortunately, you can’t install a theme on (or “upload a theme to”) a WordPress.com site. The Themes support page says:
Uploading a third-party or custom theme is possible only on self-hosted sites using the WordPress.org software. This means that you cannot upload any themes to your WordPress.com site. Uploading Custom Themes.
Instead of uploading a theme, try checking out the current theme collection to see if there’s an option there that will work well for you.
You can only choose from a theme at one of several locations, including the following:
1. My Sites → Themes, as described in the Themes support page
2. wp-admin dashboard admin panel > Appearance > Themes
3. WordPress.com Themes Showcaseand then activate it (a premium theme requires payment before activation — see Premium Themes support page).
When you want to switch to a different theme, you merely activate another one. -
That quote from the Uploading Custom Themes section of the Themes support page should have been:
Uploading a third-party or custom theme is possible only on self-hosted sites using the WordPress.org software. This means that you cannot upload any themes to your WordPress.com site. [Uploading Custom Themes.]
Instead of uploading a theme, try checking out the current theme collection to see if there’s an option there that will work well for you.
