Dashboard icons

When viewing the dashboard in IE 8, no icons are showing. I just see an outline of a box. This includes the icons in the left navigation, the icons in the WYSIWYG editor, icons in the header… not a single icon displays anywhere.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Can you check to make sure that Internet Explorer’s Compatibility View is turned off? You can find more about that here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view

If possible, I also recommend updating to IE 10, the latest version of IE: http://browsehappy.com/

If you have compatibility view turned off and are still having trouble with this in IE 8, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do!

Compatibility mode is turned off (it looks much worse with compatibility mode on).

I can’t update to IE10 due to our company policy.

Can you provide the full path (and subdomain, if applicable) where the icons are stored? Maybe our firewall is blocking access.

It’s very possible that a firewall is blocking access. Because these icons are served from several locations, you will need to be sure that *.wp.com (specifically s0.wp.com, s1.wp.com, and s2.wp.com) is not blocked by your firewall. Please let me know if you need further assistance with this!

I was able to test this on an external connection, outside the company firewall and had the same issue. The icons will not display in IE 8.

Thanks for letting me know. I tested this in IE 8 and didn’t have any trouble seeing the icons, so this is most likely caused by a setting in IE 8 or on the computers you are using.

Can you try checking the following setting in your IE 8 browser:

    1. Go to Internet Options and click on the General tab
    2. Under Appearance, click the Accessibility button
    3. Make sure that the “Ignore font styles specified on webpages” setting is unchecked
    4. Click the OK button to save your changes

Please let me know how that goes!

Thanks for the quick response. I checked the setting as suggested… all options under Accessibility are unchecked, including “Ignore font styles specified on webpages”.

Also, my security settings are set to “Medium-high”.

Well, hm! Here are a couple more things to try:

Under Users > Personal Settings in your dashboard, look for Browser Connection and check the box next to “Always use HTTPS when visiting administration pages.”

Then, try disabling any browser extensions and temporarily disabling any virus or firewall software you may be using. (This is just to test to see if that software is causing the problem. If you aren’t comfortable with that or can’t disable the software, please be sure that *.wp.com and *.wordpress.com are whitelisted there.)

If that doesn’t fix it, I want to double-check: Do you have this problem no matter what page you’re on in the dashboard? Or does it only happen in certain sections of the dashboard?

Thanks… the problem is with McAffee – it’s blocking the icons from loading:
Attack type: Vulnerability in the Embedded Open Type Font Engine Could Allow Remote Code Execution (sig id=2221)

I’ll have to work with our IT Department to see if they will allow an exception.

Thanks for helping pinpoint the problem!

I’m glad we found the source of the problem! :) Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do to help with this.
