Dashboard Issues for bcominbarcelona.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
-
I have paid for a premium wordpress.com blog site to use with students in a study abroad program. I have looked at every forum, blog site, video, etc. I understand the functionality differences between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. But in everything, I could find to understand why I am experiencing the following:
1. The appearance menu is not available in under the dashboard of the bcominbarcelona.wordpress.com/wp-admin
2. Because appearance is not available, I cannot add widgets. I’m not sure if this is because of the theme or I have a technical issue (and I am a professor of communication, not of technical/programming etc.)
3. Under MySite from the Blog homepage, I understand I will not be able to find tools from the static page, but when I go to a page on my blog (such as About) and select the option in the bottom right corner, I still do not find tools. I do see a Get Them: Edin, but when I go to the themes and try to install a new one, it tells me it is unable to install theme and I should contact support.
4. I realize for this project I should have used wordpress.org, but for the past two years I’ve paid for this site (and just renewed), so any type of help is appreciated so I can set up new user roles for my students to practice writing and posting blog posts while they are in Spain. Last year I didn’t have any trouble setting this up originally, but now am at a loss.Thank you.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
1. The appearance menu is not available in under the dashboard of the bcominbarcelona.wordpress.com/wp-admin
There is an appearance menu on your dashboard, but it will only be visible if you’re logged in as an admin user as only admins can make changes to a site’s appearance. The only admin user on your site is bchambers2, and that’s also the user who owns the Premium Plan and thus have access to live chat support.
The username you’re using to post here, barbiechambers, only has author permissions on the site. Authors can write and publish posts, edit their own posts, and moderate comments on their own posts only. They have no ability to make changes to content by other users to to make any changes to the site’s appearance, including widgets.
2. Because appearance is not available, I cannot add widgets.
Widgets can also be added via the Customizer, not just WP-Admin. But you won’t have the Customizer option either while logged in with only Author permissions.
I do see a Get Them: Edin, but when I go to the themes and try to install a new one, it tells me it is unable to install theme and I should contact support.
Theme changes can also only be made by admin users.
4. I realize for this project I should have used wordpress.org
You don’t need self-hosted WordPress for this kind of site. WordPress.com is perfect for the purpose you’re using it for, and adding your students as authors is the right way to go about it. That way they can publish their own content without messing up the site or the content of other authors.
If you have other people who help you manage the site besides the students, I’d recommend setting them as editors, which will give them the ability to edit any content from any author. And then have one admin account that can control anything on the site. If you want to add more than one admin, just make sure that it’s someone you trust not to mess up the site :)
You’ll need to be logged in as the admin account, bchambers2, to change the role of any user, or to invite new users.

You are a lifesaver! Thank you so much! I had forgotten I had a login like my students so I could view their posts, and then one as an administrator. I really appreciate your assistance with this!
