database for PDF's

    Hi WordPress community,

    I am new to wordpress so forgive me if I do not ask my question the right way.

    I am a teacher and would like to create a Blog that student-teachers can upload to WordPress their syllabi, assignments and work examples in the form of PDF’s. here is the trick, I would like others to be able to search the site for those items so they can use them as well.

    In this something WordPress can do? I am making it more complicated then it needs to be and just use ‘Tags”? or is there a Widget that would make this process even better?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    A person needs to be an Author to upload media (PDF files) – no database ability – the Uploads would probably need to be part of a Post – the Post should have a good title and then use Categories or Tags to sort things out – trying to find things in the Media Library sucks – you could make sort of a Master Post or Page and sort things out there listing the files or different Posts –
