Delay Activation/Domain Transfer

I would like to transfer my current website hosted at Bluehost to WordPress.com, but would like to wait until the hosting I have already paid for is expired (or the day before it expires), can we set it up and get things ready and then activate and pay for WordPress the day my other hosting expires so I don’t have overlap in paid services?

  • Hi there,

You can create a site for now on our free plan, using a free WordPress.com URL we’ll provide for you. But there are a couple things to keep in mind:

    1) Any content migration will have to happen before your current plan at Bluehost expires. The moment that site goes offline, or your domain gets disconnected, an import from that site will no longer work correctly.

    2) A domain transfer takes around a week to complete, so if you wait until the moment your Bluehost plan expires, you’re looking at the possibility of your site being offline for a week or more while you wait for the domain transfer to complete.

I’d recommend you create your free WordPress.com site, and move over your content.

Then at least two weeks before your Bluehost plan expires, buy a paid plan for your new site with us, connect the domain using the domain mapping option, and change the name servers to point it from Bluehost to us. Once that’s done your domain will start showing the new WordPress.com site instead of the Bluehost site, and then you can start the transfer.

Doing this two weeks before things expire at Bluehost should give ample time should anything go wrong with the process to sort things out.

You can find a detailed guide on how to migrate your content from the existing site to a new WordPress.com site here:
