I created a Word Press account because it was apparently the only way to register for a conference. Now I find that account can’t be deleted?! Yes, they can! That’s my personal information – I have the right to delete anything associated with my name. Delete my account, please.

Here’s how to deactivate your account:
All you were required to provide to register an account here was an email address that can be replaced at any time.Any personal information that you voluntarily posted can also be removed at any time.
Although username accounts are not deleted, so you cannot be impersonated and have your reputation affected by anyone registering the same username in the future, there are steps you can take that amount to removing all personal information and result in leaving only a throwaway email address behind. http://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/
1. You can go to My Account->Edit Profile and remove all data except the account name and an email address. Create a throwaway email address and change the account email to that throwaway address. This only leaves the username behind.
2. To unsubscribe from email sent to you from WordPress.com, go here and click on “Block all subscription emails from WordPress.com”:
https://wordpress.com/settings/notifications/3. To ensure the account is locked up tightly, visit this site, generate a password of 15-20 characters, and change the account password to it:

This is NOT a throwaway email address – it is my forever uniquename associated with my University of Michigan ID. Those are not changed. I used that account because it was for a professional conference, or so I thought. Remove it from your database immediately.

This shouldn’t be impossible. I do not want a Word Press account. Can you explain the purpose behind you trying to forbid people from controlling the information associated with their names? I’m so frustrated by this I’m thinking about consulting a legal team. You shouldn’t be able to control someone’s information this way. I don’t care how throwaway it is – it’s still connected to my information, and I don’t choose that it should be. Why can’t you fix this?

Not to mention, the username generated IS my U of M uniquename, because I clicked “register” on a conference website. I realize I was careless, but I was trying to work within a deadline. I thought “kmike2014” was something I needed to participate in this 2014 conference associated with my professional life.
