deleting / hiding a site

  is there any way I can hide a site? We are a charity and our webmaster unfortunately committed suicide a few years ago and the site had to be replaced as no one had access to it. I have changed the front page to redirect to the new site. I have been asked to close this one but need to get the trustees to approve it first, so wondered if I could take it off line for now but keep it live (but sleeping) until I get their approval
