Desktop App Status?
-
I think this is a simple question, and I have been unable to get the answer via googling, so hopefully someone here can shed some light.
I’ve been away from any sort of blogging for a long time, and am just now getting setup again. I used to use LiveWriter for Windows, which is no longer available. I downloaded what appears to be a Windows App offline editor (https://apps.wordpress.com/desktop). There seem to be forums for the iOS and Android versions of this app, but not for the desktop version(s).
What’s odd to me is that everything I read points me toward using blocks in my content going forward. However, I only see block options in the online editor, not in the desktop app.
My questions (assuming this is not just user error):
1. Is the Desktop App deprecated, or no longer recommended for use?
2. Is block editing expected to be added to the Desktop App? Soon?
3. If I create blocks in the online editor, what can I expect when I edit that content in the Desktop App?Thanks,
Phil

Looks like I can’t edit the original post, so quick update here.
I converted a post to blocks via the online editor. I then opened it in the online app, and it warned me and asked if I wanted to switch to the newer (block) editor. When I said yes, it opened Chrome to the online editor, and the desktop app more or less crashed.
I closed it and re-opened it a few times, and now it seems to work with full block support?
So I believe all is well. :)

Hi there,
I downloaded what appears to be a Windows App offline editor (https://apps.wordpress.com/desktop).
The WordPress desktop app is not an offline editor. You must be connected to the internet to use that app, as it essentially runs the WordPress.com website inside an Electron shell on your desktop.
There seem to be forums for the iOS and Android versions of this app, but not for the desktop version(s).
Correct. Support for the desktop app is provided directly by WordPress.com support, i.e. here in the forums, and via live chat and email for owners of sites with paid plans.
However, I only see block options in the online editor, not in the desktop app.
What site are you working on? For any WordPress.com site that’s set to the block editor, you should be able to edit posts and pages using that editor in the app.
For Jetpack-connected sites it should show the block editor as well, provided you don’t have the Classic Editor plugin active on the site. If you have the Classic Editor plugin active, it will always default to that via the WordPress.com interface, whether you’re using the web or the desktop app. This is something that’s controlled by Jetpack.
1. Is the Desktop App deprecated, or no longer recommended for use?
The desktop app is not deprecated. The most recent update to the app, v.4.6.0, was released only 19 days ago.
2. Is block editing expected to be added to the Desktop App? Soon?
Block editing is already fully supported, as I described in more detail above.
3. If I create blocks in the online editor, what can I expect when I edit that content in the Desktop App?
You should be able to just continue editing them in the block editor, provided it’s not a Jetpack-connected site with the Classic Editor plugin active.
