Disappearing Menu Headings

    I was revising headings on my blog and must have screwed up by changing the category headings first. The next thing I know the menu headings completely disappeared and when I looked into what was going on, it listed ‘invalid menu items’ and I can’t seem to revise it. I tried to reverse engineer the category headings and restore them to what they were originally….to no effect.

    Please tell me there’s an easy fix to this and simply changing my category headings didn’t wipe out any ability I have to restore the menu headings now listed as ‘invalid’. What can I do to fix this?

    Hi there,

    I’m not sure I understood your issue. To clarify, you deleted several categories from your site, yes? When you do this, the “category pages” for those also cease to exist. The menu items now show as “invalid” because of the fact that the category was deleted, so there is no longer a valid category page to display in the menu.

    There is not really a way to recover these, unfortunately. When you delete a category, it ceases to exist on your site and is permanently removed. There is nothing we can do to recover a deleted category on our end.

    Since there is no way to recover the category, there is no way to make this menu item valid either. I’m afraid you will need to go back and categorize the posts again (individually) to restore your deleted category.

    This is all kind of a blur to me with the new format so let me attempt to clarify. I believed I was changing the menu headings when I clicked on the “categories” heading underneath “posts”. I added a new category and edited several of the other ones to account for additional posts I’ve recently added.

    It was only then I realized that what I looked to change was the menus, but when I got to “menus” it listed all of my menu headings as invalid. What do I even do to “start over” if this situation is hopeless? Do I have to delete the menu headings listed as “invalid”?

    I guess I can’t wrap my mind around what happened here and still think there has to be some way to rebuild these menu headings without many hours of work. What is the point of the “categories” icon if editing them permanently erases all of the menu headings? I can’t be the first person who thought they were simply editing the names of these categories only to discover their menus were inexplicably rendered “invalid” after attempting to make a simple edit. With this additional context, is there any additional advice you can offer? Thanks

    We’re actually not seeing very many menu headings at all on the site you listed here – could you confirm what site you’re referring to?
