Display categories on home page, not just in menu

  I am trying to get the columnist theme to look like the demo.

  I want to have the categories displayed on the home page like in the demo where they have news, images, videos, design, etc. Notice how when you click News it displays 2 pages . I need my blog set up just like that.

  Also, how do I insert horizontal rules within posts like this: http://thecolumnist.info/typography/text-styles/

  Not all features of the original theme may be available here. Themes by other authors available on WordPress.com have been adapted to suit the multi-blogger, shared environment on WordPress.com.

  Did you look in the WordPress.com Theme showcase page and demo for The Columnist? http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/the-columnist/

  Have you tried setting up a Custom Menu in order to display the categories in the Menu?

  As far as the horizontal rule, using the Text Editor in your post, you can simply add <hr>
  This has to be done in the Text Editor, not the Visual Editor.
