Display name publicly as being changed to email

Normally, we have the field Display name publicly as field set to use a member’s first and last name. Lately, we have noticed that some users display names are showing up as their email. When we look at their profile in the backend, we can see that the Display name publicly as field is set to use their email instead.
There isn’t an option for a user to change their display name in the frontend, does anyone know why Display Names are changing to display email instead of their first and last name?

Hey there, could you confirm what site you’re working with? I’ve not seen this before and it sounds like your configuration might be pretty different from what we offer here. And you don’t seem to have any sites hosted here with us. It sounds like you may have meant to post in the troubleshooting forum at WordPress.org:

Got it, I can’t access that to see what you’re referring to, and I can confirm it’s using the free WordPress code rather than our service:
