DNS not changing to point to Hostgator to move from WordPress.COM to .ORG

  I recently signed up a domain using Hostgator. I installed WordPress using Hostgator. I then went to WordPress.com to change the DNS to point to Hostgator so I could move from wordpress.COM to wordpress.ORG so that I could start using plugins. However, when I click “save changes” after entering the DNS it says it is complete, then it resets to the old wordpress.COM DNS. What am I doing wrong?

  So it appears that there is a slowdown currently at our registrar. We are looking to see what we can do on our end of things. But at the moment, the answer is that these nameserver switches should go through, it may just take longer than usual.

  So, the update is that whatever was stuck should be unstuck. Please let me know if nameserver changes are going through now. You may need to change them again if your previous change has not worked yet.

  Still hasn’t worked. I changed them again. I will check again shortly but it seems to me that it resets as soon as I hit “save changes” I know it says it takes a while for it to show up in the Web but shouldn’t it at least show that I changed the Name Servers on WordPress right off and not instantly reset them to the wordpress.com Name Servers?

  As soon as I hit save it Resets to the original wordpres.com name server. Then I get an e-mail saying that my attempt to change options to my domain failed. I copy and paste exactly what it shows on the Hostgator site. This is getting a bit frustrating!

  Ok everything changed to .ORG. I imported the file I had recently exported, I got my content, but the design of my website is now completely gone. I thought I was going to be able to completely transfer the look of my website with me. Am I having to start from scratch all over again?

  Yes. Only the data transfers. Not the theme or layout.
