Do followers get notified about new posts and new pages both?

  I want to publish content that only my family can read. If I make the page password protected, will my non-family followers still be notified? I really would prefer to have control for each post as to whether followers will be notified or not, but in the absence of that, how do I add a limited visibility page or post? Is there yet any way to get rid of followers?

  Hi there!

  There’s no way to remove your followers. You could make your entire site private. Then the only people who would have access or be notified of new posts are people in your users list:

  https://plantedbytherivers.wordpress.com/wp-admin/users.php

  Password protecting a post does still send a notification to your followers, but only people with the password will actually being able to see anything other than the title of the post.

  Well, it would be weird to have a post called “update for family” and then when distant family members who don’t have the password get notified and visit the page… not really tactful. But, do both pages and posts trigger this notification to followers? Is there a possibility that there will be a way to remove followers in the future?

  Pages do not trigger email updates, so that might work for you. :)

  This isn’t currently on our roadmap. The reasoning being that anyone can visit your site and see that there’s a post there anyways. Your posts will also still go out via RSS feed (sans the password protected bits).

  A password protected page might be your best option. If you’re concerned, you can also make sure that page doesn’t end up in your menu anywhere and just email the link to those member you want to see it.
