I’m not clear exactly what it is that you want to achieve.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and the domain name your desire must be available for purchase.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

See here for mapping a sub-domain (for a domain with an existing website) to your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Hello, thanks so much for your reply. The truth is, I have a variety of related domain and upgrade questions and was trying to get to WordPress sales support. I didn’t realize I was actually posting.

I concluded that the only way to send an actual e-mail with my somewhat complicated sales questions was to buy something first. So that’s what I did. It seems to me there should be another way, but I can always get a refund if necessary.

Your responses are helpful nonetheless. Thanks!

    my somewhat complicated sales questions

See here for details of all 3 plans http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/

Note that none of the plans allow you to run advertising or to upload your own themes or plugins. WordPress.com blogs cannot be equipped for eCommerce transactions and you are not allowed to sell any product or any service your do not personally create or provide on a free hosted WordPress.com blog. If you need a site that requires a custom theme or plugins — e.g., if you want to be able to sell things directly from your site, or if you want to install discussion forums — a self-hosted WordPress site might be right for you.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and I recommend reading this for clarity.

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org
