Do I need web hosting to map an existing domain?

  I have an existing domain that I’d like to “map” to my wordpress blog. Does my existing domain need to have web hosting before I can map it to my wordpress?

  I don’t think you understand what “hosting” means. http://freeyourstemcells.wordpress.com/ is hosted here at WordPress.com. You can just buy the domain mapping upgrade and connect your custom domain to the blog.
