Do redirects work on blog transfers to wordpress.org installs
-
Can I place redirects on links when I am not changing the custom domain address of my blog, premeranews.com, but simply moving it from the wordpress.com version to a wordpress.org version hosted elsewhere? How would I set this up in the new .org installed version?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
If I understand correctly, you’d like to use the domain premeranews.com on your self-hosted WordPress.org site and retain all of your current links? To do this you’ll want to export your site here and import it into your new WordPress installation. Make sure you keep the file structure at least similar if not the same as it is here on WordPress.com.
Then when you change your name servers or updating your A records (whichever your new host prefers) your links will continue to work.
Let me know if I can help further!

Shawna, thanks for responding. Actually, the new site will use a very different IA from the new one, and we are using a very different theme (MH Magazine). Thus, it makes no sense to import anything from the old site. So we decided to manually copy and paste the stories we want to retain into the new blog site. And some stories we simply will not copy over. But for every post and page URL on the existing blog site now, we want a redirect in place so anyone with bookmarks and embedded links will be redirected to either 1.) the new version of the same story in the new site, or 2.) the home page.
Is that doable? I’m guessing I would install a redirect widget on the new .org installed site, but my questions comes down to: Can redirects work when they are redirecting from the same domain address, but for a site that is now being delivered on an installed hosted version of WordPress instead of the public .com version?

I meant to say: Actually, the new site will use a very different IA from the old (current) one, and we are using a very different theme (MH Magazine).

Once you’ve redirected the domain, your old links should continue to work as long as your file structure is similar enough to WordPress.com.
As for any ‘dead’ links, these will direct to a 404 page. I’m not aware of any way to change this behavior, but you should take a look at the available plugins for self hosted sites and see if there’s something there that does what you want.
