domain

Hello! I am trying to convert my old outdated website to a wordpress site. I have had many free blog sites in the past so I am familiar with the ease and efficiency of wordpress. I am wondering how to transfer the domain name I already own. Will the old site immediately be replaced by this site that is a work in progress? Or can I construct this sight then deactivate the old site as I activate this site? My goal is to update our site with a wordpress site without ever taking the site completely offline. Thank you!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

I assume the old site is hosted somewhere other than on WordPress.com?

In that case, as long as you don’t change the name servers of the domain to point to us, the domain will keep on showing the current site, even if you already start a domain transfer to us. We don’t automatically change the name servers on transfer.

Or you can wait with the transfer and finish setting up the new site at the free address – the end result will be the same either way. The domain will only start showing the new site once you point the name servers to us, regardless of whether you transfer the domain immediately or later.

Only thing to keep in mind is, if you transfer the domain now, make sure to still set the free WordPress.com address on the new site as primary, else you’ll be redirected to the old site every time you try to view it.
