hello! i have been managing my domain through namecheap.com – it expires in July 2019. I think it’s going to be easier to have it all managed under wordpress so i’m considering transferring it to my wordpress account (unlocking domain, and tranferring it over).
– does this mean wordpress owns my domain name management moving forward? and what happens when it expires with namecheap in 2019?
– how does payments to extend ownership renewal until July 2019?
– what are the annual fees for wordpress to manage my domain and how do i prevent anyone from taking it in the future?
– are there any downsides to having wordpress manage the domain moving forward
– one it’s transferred into wordpress, can i transfer it to another owner, say if i choose to move blog sites in the future?– if i would like to purchase another domain through wordpress and link the domain to my main divainred account and somewhat manage it separately, how do i do that and what does it cost?

No, we will never own the domain. You bought it, so you own it. If you transfer it to us it means we become your domain registrar, i.e. the website where you manage your domain registration.
If you want to transfer the domain, you need to do so before it expires at Namecheap. Once it expires you stop owning it, you wont’ be able to transfer it any more, and you actually run the risk of completely losing the domain.

If you registered the domain in July, it’s expiration/renewal date will always be in July. It doesn’t matter if you transfer it to us now in September. Transferring it to us now will also renew the domain for another year, but that just means it will be valid until July 2020. And if your linked plan renews in September 2019, the domain will renew once more at that point until July 2021. And so on.

To transfer a domain to us you need to buy one of our paid plans listed at My Site ->Plans. Each plan includes a free domain which can be used for a domain transfer, and then the domain will renew automatically when the plan renews each year.
The only way to prevent someone from taking your domain in future is to keep renewing it each year. If you stop renewing it and it expires, it will eventually be released again so anyone can use it.

This is a very hard question to answer without knowing exactly what you’d like to do with the domain in future. There are some types of DNS records we don’t support, and we have certain restrictions on how you’re allowed to use a domain connected to a WordPress.com site, but those are not necessarily downsides unless you find yourself in a position where they become that.
Should your needs outgrow what we offer you can always transfer the domain away from us again.

Yes. You can transfer a domain to another WordPress.com site or account at any time, and you can also transfer a domain away from us completely, provided the domain is not under a mandatory 60-day transfer lock at the time.

To add a domain to a WordPress.com site requires a paid plan. After that there is no limit on the number of additional domains you can buy for the same site. Just go to My Site ->Domains ->Add and select the new domain you want to register it.
If you have more than one domain on a site, one domain will be set as the primary domain. All other domains on the site will automatically redirect to the primary domain, and the primary domain is the only one that will be visible to your site visitors and that will be indexed by search engines.
