  if I fail to renew my domain before the due date, is it possible to obtain the same domain at a later time if its still available?

  Not necessarily, no.

  When a domain expires it goes through a process that lasts about 80 days, during which it becomes progressively more difficult and expensive to renew it, before it’s eventually deleted and released by the registry that controls the particular extension.

  Domain Expiration

  Once it’s released, anyone is able to register it again, and often the domain will be registered at that time by domain squatters who had it on backorder somewhere – domain squatters are people or businesses who buy up expired domains in order to sell them back to the original owners at a profit, or sometimes just to exploit the existing search engine ranking for the domain to make some money from advertising for as long as search engines still send traffic to the domain.

  In some cases the registry can also decide to simply not release the domain, or they can decide to change the domain to a premium domain, which will mean it will cost much more than the standard retail price to register – sometimes thousands of dollars a year.

  If that happens you could lose the domain completely, so to ensure that you can continue using a domain it’s best to make sure you always renew it before it expires.
