  If I select a recommended domain from wordpress and get the first year for free, what happens after the first year if I decide to stop my blog. Am I expected to pay the annual fee ?

  If you wish to own the domain, you would need to continue paying for the yearly domain registration. If you do not care what happens to the domain once you have quit blogging, then you could just let the domain expire without renewing the registration and would own nothing in the future.
