  Can I set up a site without a domain or mapping as I am going to host myself later?

  Hi –

  Yes, you can build a free site on WordPress.com but you won’t be able to edit the DNS on it to point it to different hosting. You’d need a custom domain in order to do that.

  It might be best to start out with WordPress.org if that’s where you’re headed. Here’s the material on getting started:
