  So, the short answer is, not really. To purchase a domain through WordPress.com you need to also purchase a plan. And in the rare case where a site has a domain without a plan (perhaps you transferred in a domain to us without purchasing a plan), your _____.wordpress.com URL would remain as the “primary” domain for your site.

  One of the features of all of our paid plans is to allow users to set their custom domain as primary. If your custom domain is not primary, people will still end up at your site if they type your custom domain into the address bar.
