Hi there,
I understand your concern about the domain not being available for use after cancellation. Let me explain what has happened.
When you canceled your domain, it entered a state called “redemption.” This is a standard procedure in domain registration. Essentially, canceling a domain rather than transferring it or pointing it to a different provider triggers this redemption process. During this period, the domain is not available for anyone else to register, but it’s also not active under your control.
You can learn more about this process here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/cancel-refund-a-domain/#what-happens-when-i-cancel-my-domain
The good news is that it’s still possible to recover your domain. However, there’s an $80 redemption fee associated with this process. If you’re okay with this fee, we can proceed by sending you a payment link. Once the payment is processed, we can work on restoring your domain.
Please let us know how you’d like to proceed, and we’ll be more than happy to assist you further.

When would it exit wordpress’s system/be available to the public to claim? I just want my domain back and I’m not worried anyone else would take that name. I didn’t know when cancelling it that wordpress would still hold the domain for it.

Hi @artemileewalsh, unfortunately it’s the way most domains (.com, .net, etc.) are set up no matter where you buy them. It’s a standard process. That’s why we share a warning when you try to cancel a domain.
Expired or canceled domains (that aren’t canceled in the first few days of registration) will go through this process and may be released at the end.
If you definitely want to keep the domain, I’d recommend domain redemption at this point, or you can wait it out for several more weeks and hope for its release, but there’s no guarantee unless you successfully redeem the domain.
This guide explains what happens when a domain expires. Most of the same information also applies when a domain is actively canceled. When Does a Domain Expire? When you register your domain (e.g. yourgroovydomain.com) with WordPress.com, you purchase the right to use that domain for as long as you keep the registration active. Domain registration terms are annual so your domain will nI’ll send an invoice for that so you’ve got the redemption option, or you can have us cancel the invoice. Just note if the domain goes to auction you may not be able to redeem it, but we could refund you. The whole process is pretty time sensitive, so let us know what you decide to do.
