  If someone typed in the old address will that still work?
  I want to register for therileyshot.com if someone then typed in therileyshot.wordpress.com will that re direct them or will it stop working?

  Both addresses will still work. Buying a custom domain is just like putting another door on your house; the old front door still works, you just have another one.
